Peer support

Peer Support

Peer support is a supportive counselling service designed to provide understanding, hope, and practical guidance to people facing mental health challenges or difficult life experiences. It is provided by a trained peer support worker—someone who has experienced a similar recovery or life journey and has acquired the knowledge and skills to use their lived experience professionally to support others.

Knowing that you are being supported by someone who has been through similar experiences can make a meaningful difference. Peer support sessions provide a safe, confidential, and non-judgmental space where you can talk openly about your concerns, share your experiences, and explore different ways of coping. Rather than offering ready-made solutions or making decisions on your behalf, the peer support worker helps you identify your own strengths, resources, and opportunities for recovery and personal growth.

Peer support may be beneficial if you:

  • are experiencing mental health challenges or are in recovery;
  • are adjusting to a significant life change;
  • feel isolated, overwhelmed, or in need of emotional support;
  • would like to speak with someone who understands your experience through lived experience;
  • are looking for encouragement and support on your recovery or personal growth journey.

At Selus Clinic, peer support is an integral part of our holistic approach to mental healthcare. When appropriate, peer support workers collaborate with our psychologists, mental health nurses, and other specialists to ensure that each client receives coordinated, person-centred care. This multidisciplinary approach allows us to provide comprehensive support tailored to each individual’s unique needs.

Peer support does not replace psychological, psychiatric, or medical treatment. Instead, it complements professional care by offering a unique perspective grounded in lived experience. For many people, it provides reassurance, hope, and a sense of connection, helping them feel understood while supporting their recovery and overall wellbeing.
